So my father called me yesterday and asked me what I was doing for the night. I replied, “I’m going to see Bon Qui Qui with some people from work…” And then my dad replied… “Excuse me?” Yes, father, I got to see the one and only American actress and comedian, Angela Johnson perform for the first time in Charlotte, NC as the MADtv rude fast food employee character, Bon Qui Qui. And it was hysterical!
I honestly had no idea what the hell I was about to watch, but after watching various videos of Angela’s stand-ups, I knew regardless I was going to have a good time. Work yet again provided me with the privilege to attend this show free of charge, and also bring a friend. So, I invited one of my sorority sisters and headed uptown for the show. When we got to the theater, the crowd was certainly a lively bunch. Some serious fans were sitting around us, with this one guy, who later was pulled up on stage, dancing for practically the entire three-hour show. No lie, he even danced in his seat when the people behind him told him to sit the hell down.
The Rundown
The show opened up with a stand-up segment. This was Bon Qui Qui’s last tour stop, so Angela presented her fans with the most requested jokes. They kept me laughing so much my cheeks hurt; with classics like “I’m A Cut You” and “Nail Salon.” If you are reading this and have no idea what I am talking about, go look them up now. Unless you don’t like to laugh or have fun. Then just keep reading. The show then moved to Angela’s husband’s band, Group 1 Crew. The band is a Christian hip-hop band, that I normally wouldn’t listen to, but after watching them play live and listening to some of their songs on Spotify, they grew on me. Angela’s husband, Manwell Reyes, is the lead singer of the band and has been on the music scene since 2007. Their relationship has been growing since being married in 2011; with Manwell helping Angela on her first tour as Bon Qui Qui.
More On the Show
After the band set and one more beer for my friend, Bon Qui Qui finally took the stage with her band and two incredibly talented backup dancers as a sassy MF. The whole performance was funny, with her performers adding to the comedy of the show. My face and stomach hurt from laughing so much, especially when they started playing the song “No Boyfriend.” I think one of the best things about the show was that even as Bon Qui Qui, Angela kept her show clean and humorous without using foul language which is something a lot of comedians have a hard time doing. It was impressive.
It was certainly an original show, with a comedy show and musical concert all in one place. It was nothing excepted but loved every minute of it. I certainly could relate to some of the jokes and for sure the song “Alexander Wang.” (If you shop at T-Jay Maxx go listen to this) My friend and I did enjoy ourselves, and I even got my photo liked on Instagram by Angela Johnson later that night. is a true talent both as a comedian and as a performer. She was on fire, dancing and singing up a storm. Sadly I can’t recommend you go see it because last night I attended the last tour stop. However, if Bon Qui Qui decides to make another record and go on tour again soon, Go
With Love,
