Leave it to the Vans Warped Tour to introduce me to this awesome band. A three-piece rock band originally from Hawaii, now based in San Diego, the band Pepper is amazing, fun, and sometimes pleasantly vulgar; making them a band that stands out from the rest and my newly found loves.
I was able to meet and interview the band, and besides being undoubtedly attractive men, this band is seriously talented and worth a listen. A little background on the band before we begin, Pepper consists of vocalist/guitarist Kaleo Wassman, vocalist/bassist Bret Bollinger, and drummer Yesod Williams, whose musical style is a mix of reggae-rock, alternative rock, ska, and dub. These Warped Tour veterans got their first record deal when they signed with Volcom Entertainment, a company more known for its skate and surfing apparel, and toured extensively with groups like Slightly Stoopid, Flogging Molly, and Sublime with Rome.
During Pepper’s set, energy, excitement, raw talent, and pure bliss through music were ever-present in the show. The crowd was going straight mad for this trio and I was right along with them. Their sound makes you feel like you are right there partying on the beach; with a cold beer in your hands and sand between your toes. The band’s amiable island rhythms and mellow attitudes make you just feel good, which is a big reason I automatically fell in love with the band.
After the show, my best friend and employee for the day Michele and I went backstage to try and catch the guys before they headed back to their tour bus. Luckily we did and that’s when I fell even more into the obsession with the band. Kaleo automatically noticed us from watching in the pit and gave me and Michele a kiss on the cheek. It was magical. We got to then meet the band, take some wild photos, and watch Less Than Jake with them.
Pepper currently has a new album out, Ohana, which is amazing and you can get your taste of it on Spotify before purchasing. The album has a much laid-back feel to it which is very therapeutic to your mind, body, and soul and has that perfect summer vibe. I think Pepper is an amazing band, great guys, and overall gave a great show. I mean how you can hate on a band that it’s difficult to hate on a band that emulates such positivity, loves a good party, and believes in never growing up? That’s right…you can’t!
