Lex Paige Reaction This was the second Sofar Sounds Charlotte Secret Show I attended and I can honestly say they keep getting better and better. The night’s event took place at Haylo Healing Arts Lounge located on Central Ave. The space was peaceful and welcoming, with art surrounding the walls and warm lighting, this venue was an overall inviting environment that truly fit the message that SoFar follows. This time around, the show hosted three very diverse artists who all seemed to complement each other. Starting the show was Zoë Nutt, followed by Ashtyn Barbaree, and closing the event was the one and only David Ryan Harris. I had never seen any of the artists live before, so I was very excited to be introduced to some new sounds and I had bought another one of my partners in crime in a music-loving with me to enjoy the show.
Zoë Nutt, a folk artist, is an artist to her core. With a guitar by her side, her music is a reflection of who she is and how she observes the world. “I write music to connect with people who feel the same way,” she says. “My style is eclectic and reflects my interest in all types of music.” Her music was very relaxing and listening to some of her lyrics closely really resonated with me as she sings about life and feelings, good and bad, that we all experience each day.
Ashtyn Barbaree is a 20-year-old folk singer/songwriter with an old soul from Fayetteville, Arkansas. She plays over 280 shows a year and has performed at TED talks, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and many other Arkansas festivals. Ashtyn was great to watch perform with her whimsical way of strumming her ukulele and Guitar with her mix of originals and covers.
David Ryan Harris, a soul, indie-rock singer/songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist sings like an angel. His voice is completely captivating and was my personal favorite of the show. Currently the guitarist for John Mayer, David showcased some of his songs from his new album, “Songs for Other People” that talked about things we can all resonate with.
In addition to the music, this SoFar show also had a live artist painting and for the first time food for purchase was served from Anntony’s Caribbean Cafe. Point blank, I love these shows. When you attend one you’ll understand fully why. These shows are songs from a room that brings passion, respect, and a sense of community together in one live music show. I’ve said this before in my first article on SoFar Sounds and I’ll say it again, all the bands I saw were so different but blended so well that created these magical elements. The Sofar Sounds truly give you the other side of the Charlotte music scene.
I can’t recommend attending enough, so just do me a favor and take my advice and go experience it for yourself. The next one is August 23rd, 2017, and is a special global show working with the Give A Home Charity will be on September 20th, 2017. Want to attend your first SoFar Charlotte show?
