What? What? What? What?
Yes, if you know the song “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore that was a reference above. And if you love saving and you have a knack for treasure hunting, thrift shopping may be calling your name.
One of my favorite things to do is a thrift shop. And I must say, I am PRETTY good at it. Most of the time, I can leave a consignment store with brands like J.Crew, Free People, GAP, and Kim Rogers all for prices between four and seven dollars. Some of my favorite thrift stores include Goodwill, Plato’s Closet, and The Sleepy Poet located in the Charlotte area.
To help you make the most out of your next thrift shop experience, here are a few tips on how you can thrift like a boss.
Set a Budget
Before you go thrift shopping, make sure you set a goal for yourself. It’s important not to spend over what you set for yourself as a goal. If you go in not having a general idea of what you aim to find and possibly purchase, you could walk away spending way too much and grab things you aren’t looking for.
Dress Comfortably
Some thrift stores are overcrowded and cart-less. You may find yourself carrying all your goods and sweating a lot due to you running around trying to find what you’re looking for. Dressing comfortably may even add some shopping time because you’ll be so comfy walking around the store looking for gems.
Search EVERYTHING You Can
As I mentioned above, thrift shopping is like treasure hunting. One way to find those hidden gems is by searching for everything you can. From the back racks to the racks that are way too full, name brands and items that are valuable can often be harder to find.
Cash! Cash! Cash!
When you thrift, bringing cash is crucial for helping you not only stay on budget but most of the time it can save you from walking away empty-handed. How so? Well, some thrift stores don’t accept credit/debit which can be a downer if you only have a card at hand.
Inspect Your Goods
To avoid disappointment, inspect your goods before leaving the store. Look for tears, holes, and stains. Be sure to share your Thrift Store Finds!

When I thrift shop I donate clothes as well; to keep the cycle going.
