Being stuck inside is NOT my ideal situation. I work on my computer ALL the time and staring at the screen 24/7 is not only straining my poor eyes…but a big letdown on my mental health.
So, when it comes time for some self-care, I tend to find myself wandering outside and finding adventure wherever I can. Even a little bit of sunshine and fresh air can make all the difference for me, which is how I came across these five locations in North Carolina. These places I’ve hiked and soaked up the sun, bringing me peace, wellness, and overall a good time. And with that, I hope these places (if you choose to explore) make you feel better and destress you during these hard times.
1. Lake Norman State Park: Lake Norman State Park, on the largest manmade lake in North Carolina has great trails, a small sunbathing beach, and biking trails to explore.
2. Harper Creek Falls: This is a secret gem that is a must-see. Harper Creek Falls is in two main sections, the top being a little higher than the bottom, and there lies a pool in the bedrock between the slides. When it’s warm, you can swim and the hike to the falls is moderately rough.
3. Latta Nature Center and Preserve: This preserve is Mecklenburg County’s largest and forms a green peninsula extending into Mountain Island Lake. There are so many great trails, boulder sites, fishing, and places to enjoy the water. I love hiking the trails and looking at the scenic views of the lake, forest, and the occasional horse that passes by. (Horse trails)
4. Reedy Creek Park: If you love getting lost in nature, this is the place! This park has ten miles of hiking trails located in the nature preserve. There are also sports courts, gardens, and ponds (great for fishing) and they serve ice cream during the warmer months! One of my favorite things to do at this park is to hike the longer trail and climb the random rocks I find.
5. Renaissance Park: This park was something I stumbled upon and fell in love with. The trails are pretty awesome and it’s very close to the city of Charlotte. The overall terrain of this park is beautiful and every time I’ve been, it’s peaceful and secluded. You can wander up rolling hills and if you love disc golf, visit this spot! (18-holes with great views and winding bends)
So remember guys, sometimes we need to hit the reset button and get back to our centers. Self-care is IMPORTANT and the fresh air/nature can help you reconnect. Stay safe guys and healthy, but when this all blows over…enjoy the outdoors.
With Love,
Lex Paige
