Hidden in Collettsville, North Carolina, a wonderful waterfall allows you to experience terrific views and wildlife. On one of my many day-trip adventures, I took the time to explore Harper Creek Falls and Wilson Creek which I wanted to share with all of you.
To start with, entering Pisgah National Forest to get to Harper Creek Falls and Wilson Creek is a “rocky” one. (Literally) You have to drive into the forest on a rock road, so be cautious with the vehicle you choose to drive in with. Once you arrive at the Falls parking lot, getting to Harper Creek Falls is not so easy. I chose to park at the overflow parking down the road so I could hike up the path and see more of nature. I suggest doing this so it is not only easier for you to get out and leave the park when you are ready to go, but also so you can get a nice little walking warm-up before your big hike to the falls.
Harper Creek Falls
The hike is 2.8 miles and you can continue for a 5-mile hike doing the full loop. You start with a bang hiking a rather steep incline, but the result is heavenly. If you are a beginner in hiking, this may be a challenge for you, but the trail is wide enough to step off and take breaks. It is full of a lot of roots and rocks, so be careful where you step. (I tripped a few times not watching) Once you reach the waterfall, there are two beautiful swimming holes and you can enjoy swimming, diving, trying out the road swing, sliding off the rock, or just a peaceful float. My first trip to Harper Creek Falls was during early April, so the water was way too cold to jump in.
When I arrived at the falls, you must use the ropes provided to get down to the fall base and watering holes. The first rope to the lower hole isn’t bad, but the second is scary. My advice is to go slow and you’ll be just fine. For me, sliding on my booty was easiest, and climbing back up just took a bit more effort and upper body strength. While at the waterfall, I spend my time basking in the falls’ mist, sunbathing on the rocks, and exploring nature along the trail. You can find directions HERE on how to get to the waterfall.
Wilson Creek
Wilson Creek is truly a scenic river located in the Pisgah National Forest. If you love fly fishing, this is your spot. This is a 49,000-acre area of wilderness where you can enjoy kayaking, hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, and more. If you love being in the outdoors, this creek will allow you to wander to the fullest. One of the coolest things about this creek is it opens into a 200-foot-deep gorge of granite bedrock. I loved exploring the rocks and practicing some yoga. You can find directions HERE on how to get to Wilson Creek.
Going on an outdoor adventure in North Carolina is always a fun day for me. I loved visiting these spots and certainly lucked out with gorgeous weather. Be safe and enjoy your adventures wherever they may be.
With Love,
Lex Paige
